Mijn naam is Laura Henny Stoets. Ik ben geboren midden in de Tweede Wereldoorlog, een oorlog waarvan ik me slechts enkele, bepaald niet onaangename, dingen kan herinneren. Wij woonden in Den Helder, een marinestad die erg werd gebombardeerd. Ik herinner me het gezang van de bommenwerpers die regelmatig over kwamen vliegen en ik herinner me dat mijn moeder dan met mij en mijn broer en zus in de kast in de kamer onder de trap ging zitten. Ik herinner me geen angst. Ik, de jongste, mocht op schoot zitten en vond dat wel gezellig en mijn moeder zong.
Af en toe kreeg mijn moeder wat eten voor haar en de kinderen toegestopt door een aardige mevrouw. Deze werd na de oorlog kaalgeschoren en bespuugd en uitgescholden voor moffenhoer. Mijn ouders keken met lede ogen toe. Ze konden de vrouw niet helpen. Ze waren machteloos tegen zij die “goed” waren geweest in de oorlog, (althans dat zeiden ze) en die vonden dat ze het recht hadden anderen die minder goed waren geweest, te vernederen. Omhoog komen door een ander naar beneden te trappen, vond mijn vader.
Ik herinner me de Amerikaanse jongens, Mormonen, die na de oorlog met enige regelmaat langs kwamen bij ons in de Fazantenstraat 26. Ze hadden vreemde namen en spraken een raar soort Nederlands. Ze sprongen over het tuinhekje van de voortuin heen, zonder het te openen en ik bewonderde hen zeer. Ze deelden Maple Leaf kauwgum uit en lachten en waren vrolijk. Eens gaven ze mijn moeder een blik zwarte vruchten. Pruimen dacht mijn moeder, maar oh gruwelijkheid het waren olijven. Ik zag haar een heel vies gezicht trekken. Olijven moest ze nooit meer.
Ik herinner me dat mijn zusje thuis kwam met een bruine reep die ze van een Amerikaan had gekregen. Wat moest ze daarmee? Mijn moeder glimlachte en zei: Dat is chocola, dat kan je eten. Proef maar, het is lekker.”
Toen de jongens terug moesten naar Amerika zongen we:

Dat liedje hadden we van hen geleerd. Wat het precies betekende wat we zongen, wisten we niet. Maar de jongens trokken dan wel altijd een droevig gezicht. En dat vonden wij kinderen leuk.
Nog jarenlang hebben mijn ouders met de Mormonen gecorrespondeerd. Die hadden wel gewild dat we meegingen naar Amerika, naar Salt Lake City, maar daar begonnen mijn ouders na rijp beraad toch niet aan.
Niet lang na de bevrijding werd mijn moeder ziek. Ze moest worden geopereerd aan struma. Nabehandeling met pillen of zoiets werd niet gegeven. Slordig? Of deed men dat toen niet?
Ook kreeg ze borstkanker en werd haar rechterborst afgezet in het ziekenhuis. Ze had drie kleine kinderen. Huishoudelijke hulp was er niet of kreeg ze niet. Mijn oma kwam om te helpen, want mijn vader moest gewoon naar zijn werk. Dat was geen succes. Vergeleken met mijn moeder had mijn oma een gat in haar hand. Mijn vader leende van zijn oudste zuster Annie en haar man, oom Siemon, geld op afbetaling; het kon niet anders. Mijn oma wist niet hoe gauw ze weer naar huis moest toen mijn moeder uit het ziekenhuis werd ontslagen.
Omdat er geen hulp was, moest mijn moeder na thuiskomst volop aan de bak. Ze moest elke week de overalls van mijn vader boenen op het plaatsje achter het huis. En dan huilde ze van pijn. Jarenlang werd ze bestraald, naar later bleek met een te hoge dosis straling. Ze moest dat laten doen in het Antonie van Leeuwenhoekhuis in de Sarphatistraat in Amsterdam. Ze zal zich wel ellendig hebben gevoeld na zo’n bestraling maar ze liet ons niets merken.
Ze voelde zich verminkt en niet aantrekkelijk meer na de amputatie. De rechter cup van haar bh vulde ze op met zakdoeken. Pas vele en vele jaren later vertelde een vriendelijke verkoopster bij Vroom en Dreesman haar dat er ook prothesen bestonden voor in de bh.

We waren rooms-katholiek. Dat wil zeggen: mijn vader was rooms-katholiek. Toen mijn vader en moeder trouwden, moest mijn moeder ook katholiek worden en beloven dat de kinderen die uit het huwelijk zouden worden geboren, katholiek zouden worden opgevoed. Mijn moeder heeft zich nooit echt geaccepteerd gevoeld door de roomse gemeenschap: ze was “maar” katholiek geworden. Maar met pastoor Van Veen van de Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Onbevlekt-Ontvangenkerk in de Visbuurt, liep ze weg.
Die kerk, onze kerk, gebouwd in Neoromaanse stijl, architect Theo Asseler, wordt niet langer voor de eredienst gebruikt. De kerk werd omgetoverd tot dansschool maar later werd dit monument verkocht. In het Noordhollands Dagblad van 5 december 2020 staat dat Randall Ciere, als toekomstige eigenaar van de OLVOOkerk, er in wil gaan wonen; hij zegt: “Het is alsof je de eetzaal van Harry Potters Zweinstein binnenloopt!”
Op zondagochtend moesten we naar de kerk. Ik ging het liefst naar de Hoogmis omdat dan gezongen werd. Mijn vader en mijn broer zongen ook in het koor. Mijn vader genoot daar echt van. Nadeel was dat de Hoogmis wat langer duurde dan de andere missen die op zondag werden opgedragen, want dat hele misgebeuren vond ik maar saai. Gelukkig dat je nog af en toe moest opstaan of knielen en niet de hele tijd op die harde, houten bank hoefde te blijven zitten.
Ik ben uiteraard katholiek gedoopt en ik heb mijn Eerste Heilige Communie gedaan toen ik een jaar of zes was. Maar aan Plechtig Aangenomen ben ik niet toegekomen. Net voor die tijd traden we uit het geloof omdat de pater, die mijn moeder thuis de biecht had afgenomen, de buurvrouw vertelde wat ze allemaal had gezegd. De babbelkous. Dat was niet te verteren, die schending van het biechtgeheim. We waren acuut katholiek af. Zelfs pastoor Van Veen kon daar niets aan veranderen. En ik moest van de katholieke lagere school overstappen naar de openbare lagere school (de voorschool, een opleidingsschool!!) van meneer Kramer. De deken is nog aan de deur geweest om mijn ouders te overreden terug te komen naar de kerk, maar mijn vader was niet te vermurwen. Een goede deken was nooit weg, vond hij, maar van het katholieke geloof hoefde hij niets meer te weten. Jammer vond ik dat wel. Nu hoefden we op zondagochtend niet meer naar de kerk, maar moesten we verplicht uitslapen. En dat was nog veel saaier dan een kerkgang
Mijn ouders waren arm; ik had dat pas door toen ik een jaar of acht was. Ze draaiden elk dubbeltje driemaal om voor ze het uitgaven. Mijn vader werkte 6 dagen per week. Hij ging om 7 uur de deur uit en fietste door weer en wind naar het werk op de Rijkswerf. Scheepmaker was hij. In mijn herinnering kwam hij pas om 6 uur ’s avonds weer thuis. Doodmoe. Soms had hij overwerk. Dan zat er zaterdags wat meer weekloon in het doorzichtige, papieren loonzakje. Van het vakantiegeld werden kolen gekocht: antraciet, eierkolen en turf. Die gingen in een kolenhok dat mijn vader in de tuin had getimmerd. Zaterdags nam mijn vader als vast ritueel een bloemetje mee voor mijn moeder. Ik herinner me niet dat ze ooit uitgingen. Alles was voor de kinderen.
Dankzij hen kreeg ik de kans om te studeren, ondanks dat de familie het zonde vond van de investering: een meisje ging toch trouwen. Mijn studie heeft ze heel wat opofferingen gekost. Ze klaagden nooit en lieten nooit merken dat het ze zwaar viel, al dat sappelen. En ik nam alles voor zoete koek aan. Ik vond het allemaal heel gewoon wat ze deden. Ik heb de kans gemist om ze bij hun leven te zeggen hoe lief ze me waren en hoe dankbaar ik hen ben.
